KEARNEY — The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grass fire west of town during the afternoon hours of Tuesday, July 7.

At 1:35 p.m., the KVFD was dispatched to W. 18th St. for the report of a grass fire on the south side of the road.

On scene, the fire appeared to have started in the ditch and was spreading farther to the south.

Two KVFD grass rigs were on site and were working to extinguish the flames. After the visible flames were knocked down, firefighters worked the area with fire hoses putting out any hot spots.

A tanker later arrived on scene to provide additional water to the grass rigs.

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene and provided traffic control. The cause of the fire was not available on scene.
