Kearney, Neb. — The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) was dispatched to 1120 62nd Avenue for the report of a fully engulfed structure fire.

Dispatch advised while enroute that this was a shop and not a residence. Upon arrival KVFD established command and crews began defensive fire attack operations and worked to protect exposures and nearby hazards including fuel tanks and a propane tank.

KVFD crews also worked to extinguish a grass fire in the field south of the structure that was caused by falling embers from the burning structure. Elm Creek Fire Department was called for mutual aid. A water shuttle operation was established for water supply. Firefighters were on scene for approximately four hours.

The State Fire Marshal was called to assist with the fire cause and origin investigation. The cause is undetermined at this time. The approximately 60′ X 120′ building was a total loss. No injuries were reported.

Other agencies assisting at the scene were the Buffalo County Sheiff’s Office, CHI Good Samaritan EMS, Dawson Public Power, and Black Hills Energy.
