The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) was dispatched to an industrial fire at Andersen Wrecking, 1912 Avenue M. Upon arrival, KVFD crews found heavy black smoke and flames coming from the exterior and interior of Andersen’s sorting building. Firefighters worked to extinguish the conveyor belts on the structure’s exterior while crews made entry for fire attack and search. Crews found additional conveyor belts on fire inside of the structure. The fire was brought under control at 12:28. No injuries were reported. The Nebraska State Fire Marshal was requested to assist KVFD with the fire origin and cause investigation. The cause remains under investigation. However, the initial investigation indicates that the fire was caused by molten metal that fell into a debris pile and spread to the conveyor belts. Other agencies who responded and assisted KVFD were Good Samaritan EMS and the Kearney Police Department.
