The history of the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department officially began on 11 July 1883, with a meeting for the purpose of incorporating the Kearney Protective Hook and Ladder Company #1. Initially the equipment consisted of ladders, hooks and buckets purchased in 1875 by a City ordinance.

Ed Find and Pard Porter Fire Companies were formed.

December 1, 1939
KVFD move into the City Hall

February 1940
Petition Started to form Rural Fire Department.

December 25, 1969
United Methodist Church Fire Occured.

July 10, 1998
Fire Station 2 opened.

