
ABOUT
The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department is a rather unique organization in the fact that it is comprised of three different separate entities that operate together for the benefit of the citizens in our fire district.
CITY OF KEARNEY
The City of Kearney employees 12 full time and 12 part time Fire Engineers, a Fire Administrator, an Office Manager, a part time Secretary.
SUBURBAN FIRE PROTECTION
The Suburban Fire Protection District 1 provides fire protection for Buffalo & Kearney County, excluding the city of Kearney.
KEARNEY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT.
KVFD is its own private corporation consisting of the membership and Reserve Company, members retired from firefighting but still assist.

OUR HISTORY
The history of the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department officially began on 11 July 1883, with a meeting for the purpose of incorporating the Kearney Protective Hook and Ladder Company #1. Initially the equipment consisted of ladders, hooks and buckets purchased in 1875 by a City ordinance.
July 17, 1883 | Wide Awake Hose Company #1 Formed
July 26, 1887 | Department set World Record for Man-Drawn fire cart.
May 16, 1935 | Ed Find and Pard Porter Fire Companies were formed.
December 1, 1939 | KVFD move into the City Hall
February 1940 | Petition Started to form Rural Fire Department.
December 25, 1969 | United Methodist Church Fire Occured
October 1, 1972 | First Station 1 was moved the where the United Methodist Chuch sat.
July 10, 1998 | Fire Station 2 opened
