The Kearney Firefighter's Auxiliary was recognized in the National Firemen's Magazine in October, 1958 as the OLDEST known auxiliary in the state of Nebraska. Organized in the 1918 as a social group with a membership of 35, records show that children accompanied their mothers to the meetings. Noting that many times, more children were in attendance than adults. An 84th birthday party was celebrated in 2002 in conjunction with the Antique Fire Engine Muster. A salad luncheon was held at the Fire Department with all the Auxiliaries in the state invited to the party. Honored guests were members that had belonged since the 1950's or before.

The Auxiliary today, works diligently to serve the community with acts of benevolence. They assist the Fire Department wherever and whenever possible, meals after house burns, large fires, funerals social functions, welcome gifts for new firefighter spouses, etc. They also donate to local organizations, needy families, and make large monetary donations to the state project of assisting St. Elizabeth Burn Center in Lincoln, Ne.

The current Auxiliary hosts an annual soup supper, (prizes given for the tastiest) to encourage new membership and helps get acquainted with new firefighters, and their spouses. The Auxiliary and the City of Kearney are very proud of our Volunteer Fire Department.
